The Fort Lauderdale City Commission on Tuesday proclaimed June 2025 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and recognized local LGBTQ organizations and institutions for their civic contributions.
The proclamation, read from the mayor’s office, cited the 55th anniversary of early Pride marches and Fort Lauderdale’s longstanding LGBTQ institutions, including the World AIDS Museum, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives and Library, and the Sunshine Cathedral. City officials said the city welcomes more than 1.3 million LGBTQ visitors annually and emphasized Fort Lauderdale’s role as a visible international destination for LGBTQ tourism.
Several community leaders accepted the proclamation. Robert Boo of the Pride Center thanked the commission and said the center has served the community for more than three decades. “Love wins. Love will always win,” Boo said. Robert Kesten, executive director of the Stonewall National Museum, gave remarks about Pride as an inclusive event: “Pride is important not because it's a gay or lesbian or bi or trans thing. It's because it's the one event every year that welcomes everybody under the rainbow flag.”
Commissioner Glassman and other commissioners joined community leaders at the podium to present the proclamation. The proclamation affirms the city’s support for equality and recognition of local organizations that provide services and cultural assets to residents and visitors.
The commission presented the proclamation and invited representatives from a range of local LGBTQ organizations to the podium; multiple speakers addressed the commission in appreciation.
