Santiago Cruz, a student, told the Spokane City Council on Wednesday he wants to join the Bicycle Advisory Board because he bikes to school “every single day no matter the weather.”
Cruz said vehicle traffic often leaves cyclists without adequate room on roads near Monroe and other routes in Spokane, and that many students “are scared to be on the road a lot” so they often use back roads for group rides. He explained he sometimes serves as the group’s “sweeper” — carrying a med kit, tools and a pump to assist riders if someone breaks down.
Councilors thanked Cruz for stepping forward and representing young cyclists. The interview was introductory; staff said the board would follow its normal appointment process and Cruz would hear next steps from the Bicycle Advisory Board.
