Wheeling to open 34-space monthly lot at former Center Wheeling ramp; council chambers to be relocated during renovations

WHEELING, W.Va. — The city will open a temporary monthly parking area at the site of the former Center Wheeling parking structure and the council chamber will be unavailable for part of the summer while building renovations proceed, City Manager Heron told council on June 3.
Heron said the remaining ramp segment from the former structure — a concrete ramp from Market Street up to Chaplin Street — has been cleaned and partitioned to create roughly 34 monthly spaces. The city plans to offer the stalls as monthly parking at $40 per month and expects to have the area open by the end of the week or early next week; he said the city already has inquiries for about half of the spaces.
The city manager said the parking area is marked as a future development site and is intended as a temporary measure to help employee parking in the Center Wheeling area while development plans proceed. The ramp is in good condition but requires minor repairs before it opens.
Heron also reported ongoing renovations in the municipal building: ceiling and HVAC work is nearing completion on the second floor, and the first floor (council chambers area) will be the next to be undertaken. He said relocation of the finance department and the water and sewer department is likely while work proceeds, and the council chambers will not be available for a period of weeks to months this summer and into early fall. Meetings are expected to be held in a courtroom on another floor while renovations occur; the city will notify the public in advance of any room changes.
Mayor Denny McGruder noted the city will post related material and suggested the Wheeling Heritage website may host event or historical materials referenced during remarks. No formal council action was required; the report was informational.
