The Clay County Board of Commissioners approved awarding a bridge‑removal contract in Elmwood Township to Dennis Drews Inc. after a public bid opening produced five proposals.
Justin, the county engineer, presented bids for SAP 145‑90‑009 (Elmwood Township bridge removal). The engineer's estimate had been $207,415; bids received ranged from $127,722 to $262,500. Bidders and amounts presented were M and M Contractors, LLC ($262,500); Comstock Construction Inc. ($233,400); Midwest Contracting LLC ($218,433.15); Gladden Construction Inc. ($192,156.60); and Dennis Drews Inc. ($127,722).
"I did talk to Dennis Drews during the bid process and ... he did mention that a lot of contractors are looking for work," Justin said, and reported no reservations in recommending the low bidder based on prior county work.
Commissioner Baer moved to award the contract to Dennis Drews Inc. for $127,722, contingent on there being no errors in the bids; a second followed and the motion carried on a voice vote.
Justin said the project is a bridge removal and that the town bridge fund would not be used to cover additional costs for the project. The board asked staff to track awarded projects and to evaluate under‑budget results for potential reallocation to other highway projects.
