Committee endorses awarding sidewalk beveling on-call contract up to $350,000

The committee voted to forward a staff recommendation to award the concrete sidewalk beveling on-call contract to the lowest responsive, responsible bidder for a three-year term not to exceed $350,000.
Operations manager Jared Larson explained the contract covers grinding or sawing high sides of uplifted sidewalk panels to remove trip hazards. Staff used the small works roster and received three bids. Larson said the contract is intended for ongoing maintenance, primarily along arterial streets, and is funded from the streets general maintenance fund and motor vehicle excise tax.
Larson clarified that the contract can be used on arterial corridors (city responsibility) and, in some circumstances, for work in front of private homes; in homeowner cases the city may bill the property owner depending on the cause. He said marked trip hazards reduce city liability but do not eliminate it.
The mayor recommended authorizing award to the lowest responsive bidder. Councilmember Morrison moved to forward Option 1 to the June 17 consent agenda; the committee voted unanimously to do so. The motion was seconded by Chair Jared Dovi.
