Taos County approves contract to update Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Taos County Commission on a motion approved contract TCC2025-9 to update the county Hazard Mitigation Plan, a project funded through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA.
County staff said the plan update will consolidate current risk assessments — including dams, wildfires, avalanches and pandemic planning — and add lessons learned from recent events such as the winter squall. "It usually takes about 12 to 18 months," the presenter said, and staff asked the commission for approval so work can proceed before grant deadlines.
Commissioners asked who will sit on the plan's steering committee; staff said the committee will include Taos County planning and zoning, representatives from the town of Taos, Taos Ski Valley, Cuesta, Red River, Taos Pueblo, Picuris and nonprofit stakeholders. Staff said it had sent the contract to Homeland Security for review and that the grant funds cover the work.
A motion to approve came from Commissioner Vigil and was seconded by Commissioner Brush. The commission voted in favor.
Staff said the project will include workshops and public input through the steering committee and that the contractor selection had already met Homeland Security review criteria.
