HDC approves gray Benjamin Moore paint; door to be white or darker blue by chair approval

The Nantucket Historic District Commission approved a paint and trim scheme and a conditional door color for an application described as the “view from 52719 Lily Street.” Commissioners reviewed a live paint swatch and, after several members said the on-site sample read grayer than online samples, approved Benjamin Moore 1634 for the house siding.
Commissioners agreed the proposed blue door appeared “brighter” in person than shown online. The applicant offered two options: paint the door the same trim color (white) or submit a darker complementary blue for approval. The commission’s motion approved the siding color and allowed the chair or vice chair to approve the final door color between those two options.
During the discussion, several commissioners said the field sample was acceptable, while some asked that the chair be allowed to require the door be modified to a darker tone if the chosen blue proved too vivid at inspection. The motion passed with one commissioner recorded as opposed; the chair recorded the overall outcome as carrying.
The HDC recorded the approval with the condition that the door either be painted white or a darker complementary blue submitted to and approved by the chair or vice-chair at final inspection. The decision was administrative and did not change other approved details of the application.
