CRA staff told the Panama City Community Redevelopment Agency on June 3 that negotiations with the Sankofa group over the southwest corner of Fifteenth Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard are ongoing and that a public meeting will be held Thursday, June 5 at the Glenwood Community Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
"We remain very optimistic that a complete development agreement will be ready for the board's consideration at either the July or maybe the August CRA board meeting," a staff presenter said, summarizing biweekly negotiations and work on project scope, timelines and community alignment.
The April 15 CRA authorization to enter negotiations with Sankofa produced subsequent biweekly meetings among staff, Sankofa representatives and legal counsel, staff said. The June 5 meeting is intended to present plans and solicit community feedback; staff emphasized it is an update item only and not a voting item at the June 3 meeting.
Board member Lucas thanked staff and said the process is proceeding with due diligence and community outreach. No board vote was taken on the development itself at the June 3 meeting.
Public commenters who addressed the Glenwood project at the start of the meeting urged developers to include modest single-family homes rather than multi-unit apartments, and requested that small business space and grocery access be considered as part of future proposals. Staff and the board said those comments will be included in the upcoming community meeting and in continued negotiation with the Sankofa group.
