UCPS finance staff flags charter-school oversight change in state budget negotiations

Union County Public Schools finance staff told the finance committee in June 2025 that a provision in pending state budget legislation would move oversight of the Charter School Commission away from the state superintendent and could change processes for transferring local dollars to charter schools.
“I had a webinar this past week that is related to charter schools. They are removing the oversight of the Charter School Commission from the state superintendent,” Miss McLean, finance staff, said. She said both chambers had agreed on the provision and that she was unsure how the change would affect local fund-transfer processes.
Miss McLean said the provision, if enacted, would “begin really defining processes of how we transfer local dollars to them,” and that the potential change made her “nervous” given uncertainties about payment processing. Committee members did not propose formal action during the meeting and asked no procedural questions beyond the update.
The committee discussion did not include statutory citations or specific text of the legislation; staff characterized the information as preliminary and said the district would monitor developments as the state budget process continued.
