The City of Liberty Lake Parks & Arts Commission voted June 2 to allocate $1,000 to support a bike-safety rodeo at the city’s Barefoot in the Park event, funding helmets and printed bike-safety materials for children.
Commissioners agreed the one-hour skills session — planned for families and children who pre-register — will include stations to teach starting, stopping, signaling and obstacle avoidance. The session is intended for children who already ride and will require parental or guardian sign‑offs on waivers.
Recreation coordinator Mikkel Stevens explained the city has donated helmets available from prior partnerships and that the newly authorized funds would purchase additional water bottles and booklets if needed. Committee member Katie Farris presented estimated unit costs: about $13 per water bottle and about $4 for a safety booklet; commissioners agreed a $1,000 allocation would cover the planned supplies and leave room for incidental costs.
The commission moved and seconded the allocation and approved it unanimously. Staff will coordinate ordering, size requirements for helmets and distribution logistics; volunteers will operate stations during the event.
