The Columbia County Board of Commissioners on June 3 approved a resolution consenting to the sale of tax‑exempt bonds to be used by a charter school to add classrooms.
County staff explained the action is a required approval by the local governing authority under federal tax‑exempt bond rules and that the county will not be liable for repayment. "It has nothing to do with county taxes. It has nothing to do with liability of this board or the development authority," a county staff member said. Staff also noted the county held a public hearing on the bond issuance as part of the transparency process.
The board moved and approved Resolution No. 20517; county staff said the bonds are a pass‑through and that a percentage of any liability rests with the school itself. Staff said the same approval had been done previously for the same school without issue.
