Weber County approves contract with First Responders First for mental-health services funded by state grant

The Weber County Commission on June 3 approved a contract between the county and First Responders First to provide mental-health services, training and crisis intervention for county staff and members of the county’s multidisciplinary team (MDT).
Scott Brinkman, speaking for the county’s Criminal Justice Center, said the program will be fully funded by a Department of Public Safety grant; services include periodic check-ins every three to 12 months depending on position, on-site crisis intervention and training tailored to first-responder experiences. Brinkman said the First Responders First staff include individuals with law enforcement and fire backgrounds, which he said helps foster rapport with clients who are first responders.
Brinkman told commissioners the MDT comprises about 40 to 45 members and that the contractor can provide all needed services without bringing in additional vendors. Commissioners expressed support for offering the resource to employees who handle difficult and potentially traumatic cases; the commission approved the contract by voice vote.
The contract approval included no additional county funding in the hearing record because Brinkman said the program is funded entirely through the Department of Public Safety grant. The county will monitor delivery per standard contract administration procedures.
