Cary board approves ordinance creating standing deputy mayor position

The Village Board approved an ordinance on June 3 amending the village code to create a standing deputy mayor position to preside at meetings when the mayor is absent.
Trustee Cecconi praised the appointment and said the change makes clear who will preside if the mayor cannot attend a meeting. “Pretty much what it is is that if I'm not at a meeting, Ellen takes over,” the mayor said at the meeting, explaining the practical effect of the ordinance and noting the standing appointment reflects practices in other communities.
Cecconi said the appointment recognizes Trustee Ellen’s experience and seniority. A village staff member clarified that the trustee serving as deputy mayor remains a trustee and does not assume mayoral powers beyond presiding at meetings.
The board voted by roll call and the motion passed with all trustees voting yes. No other changes to mayoral authorities were made during the session; the ordinance sets a standing presiding appointment to provide continuity for meeting administration.
