Parks staff told the council the structure’s damage was severe and removal was required for public safety. “After an automobile accident in October of 2024, the gazebo in Old Settlers Park ... was removed,” Mike said. City staff reported that after months of negotiations with insurers they received a reimbursement check for $56,366.50 and requested the funds be placed in an account for replacement.
Staff also provided a replacement cost estimate. “Replacement cost for that exact gazebo would be $126,411.11,” Mike said, based on price quotes and project manager estimates. Staff said timing for any rebuild is unknown and the insurance funds would be held pending future decisions tied to the downtown master plan and a possible reimagination of Old Settlers Park.
Council discussion noted safety and design opportunities. Staff said they have moved planting pots as a temporary traffic/safety measure and would consider bollards and other physical controls during any redesign. Councilmembers asked whether restroom facilities were being considered as part of broader downtown discussions; staff said public restrooms remain a high priority but site and flood‑plain constraints limit options.
