Johnson County board approves check register; staff reports change in life insurance carrier

Johnson County board members approved the check register for March 11 through May 9, 2025, during their May 12 meeting. The register totaled $1,176,663.96, of which bond payments were $1,132,014.92 and ordinary checks were $44,649.04.
During discussion, a board member asked about a Sun Life Insurance entry. Jesse (staff) said the county recently changed vendors for life insurance and long-term disability to a less expensive company, but that the benefits themselves were unchanged. "It is a change to our life and our long term disability. It came in much less expensive than our prior policies," Jesse said. Jesse said the change occurred roughly two months earlier and that staff had worked with John (staff) on the change.
Board members also discussed employee health coverage. A board member recalled prior efforts to enroll these employees in the county health plan and noted that because the employees are not technically county employees the county provides a stipend for health insurance rather than directly enrolling them. Jesse confirmed the stipend arrangement and said the organization has historically offered term life insurance in its benefits package.
A motion to approve the check register was made, seconded and carried on an aye voice vote.
