Solanco board approves one-year student-assistance contract with Richard J. Kern Foundation

The Solanco School District Board of School Directors on June 2 approved a one-year agreement with the Richard J. Kern Foundation to provide a Student Assistance Program assessor shared between the high school and both middle schools.
School staff said SAP is required by school code but participation in the assessment and any recommended services is voluntary for students and parents. "SAP is a requirement; the services that are offered through SAP...are not necessarily required for parents or students to take," a district staff member said during the meeting.
Under the contract the assessor would work five days per week during the school year, splitting three days at the high school and one day at each middle school; elementary referrals would be made if needed. District presenters said the contract covers the assessor’s total cost and that last year the service cost about $63,000–$64,000 and this year rose by about $5,000.
Board members discussed past providers; district staff said Lancaster Drug and Alcohol Commission had provided services at times but often had limited availability. The motion to approve the agreement passed with a voice vote and no recorded opposition.
The board did not include a detailed line-item price in public discussion, and staff said the contract is for one year only; further vendor evaluation was mentioned as part of routine budgetary review.
