The Plan Commission recommended approval of temporary and monument signage for Saint Barnabas’ location as the parish consolidates three former sites, subject to removal once full consolidation occurs.
City planning staff told commissioners the parish is consolidating Saint Augustine, Saint Rita’s and Holy Assumption and that two of the three properties require sign-plan appeals because the parish expects the temporary signs to remain longer than the sign code’s 30-day limit. Staff recommended approval of the signage plan with the condition that all temporary signage be removed upon full consolidation.
Ben Crockman of Innovative Signs, representing Saint Barnabas, told the commission the consolidation process is under way but the parish does not have a definite timeline; he estimated the process could take about a year. He also described the proposed material for the temporary sign as Dibond, a general-purpose aluminum composite material he said would last several years though the parish expects the sign to be removed after consolidation.
Commissioners discussed whether the commission should set a specific maximum duration; the commission ultimately moved and seconded a recommendation that would allow an extended temporary period and require sign removal when consolidation is complete. The motion passed with one abstention.
Why it matters: the decision allows Saint Barnabas to advertise consolidated services while preserving the commission’s ability to require removal after the parish finalizes property sales and consolidation.
