Pataskala City utility staff reported that EPA-conducted tests of the city’s well sources screened for 25 different PFAS compounds and returned “none detected” across all wells and analytes.
Staff told the utility committee the result is the second negative PFAS test they know of for the city's wells and that a recent cleanup at a nearby site (referred to in the meeting as the Matlax site) had not increased PFAS levels in the well field. The presenter said the tests used a sensitive methodology and that finding no detectable PFAS on that panel was encouraging.
Committee members asked whether PFAS would typically come from agricultural runoff or firefighting foam; staff said PFAS compounds appear across many products and industrial uses and that, if PFAS were detected in a well, ion-exchange technology is an effective treatment but would produce a concentrated waste stream that must be managed and disposed of at an approved facility.
Staff noted the EPA performed this testing for 25 PFAS analytes — a broader list than an earlier sampling event — and that the agency constrained cleanup activities at the nearby site to substances covered by the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The committee received the update; no action was required.
