St. Charles mayor proclaims June 6 National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Mayor Clint Hall read a proclamation on June 2 declaring June 6, 2025, National Gun Violence Awareness Day in the City of Saint Charles and encouraged citizens to wear orange to raise awareness about gun violence.

The proclamation says in part: "Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Clint Hall, Mayor and City of St. Charles, declare 06/06/2025 to be National Gun Violence Awareness Day in St. Charles. I encourage all citizens to wear orange to raise awareness about gun violence and out of the lives of gun violence victims and survivors and support local efforts to prevent the tragic defense of gun violence." Mayor Hall read the proclamation during the council meeting's ceremonial items.

Rebecca Slovak, a volunteer with the Kane and Kendall Counties chapter of Moms Demand Action, spoke at the meeting after the proclamation. "As a local chapter, we are purposely working with community members and organizations on initiatives to promote secure storage and educate families on how to keep children safe," Slovak said.

Slovak described secure firearm storage as the "most effective way to prevent gun violence, tragedies," and thanked the city and local public safety agencies: "I want to thank the city council, the St. Charles Police Department, Kane County Sheriff's Department, and all others who help keep us safe." She also referenced Hadiya Pendleton and the origin of Wear Orange Day.

The proclamation and public remarks were ceremonial actions; no ordinance or binding policy was adopted at the meeting. The mayor also said the Municipal Building Tower would be lit orange all weekend in support of the awareness day.
