Renton council approves temporary street closures for I-405 interchange and South Seventh Street corridor work

The Renton City Council voted to adopt two resolutions authorizing temporary street closures to support transportation construction projects.

The Transportation and Aviation Committee had recommended concurrence with staff: a full weekend closure of Northeast 40th Street between North 40th Street and the I-405 off-ramp to lower NE 40th Street to its final elevation; and intermittent full closures of Burnett Avenue South and Smithers Avenue South for up to three weeks beginning June 3, 2025, as part of the South Seventh Street Corridor Improvements Project.

Council Member McGurvin moved that the council concur with the Transportation Committee reports and moved adoption of the related resolutions; Council Member Perez seconded the concurrence and the motions to adopt the resolutions. Both resolutions were adopted by voice vote; the transcript records the motions and that they carried.

The NE 40th Street closure was authorized for weekend full closure to allow final elevation lowering work west of I-405. The South Seventh Street corridor project will require full intermittent closures of adjacent local streets (Burnett Ave S and Smithers Ave S) for up to three weeks starting June 3 to accommodate construction activities.

Council did not record any dissenting votes during adoption. The resolutions are procedural approvals enabling Public Works and contractor crews to implement planned construction schedules and traffic control for the stated time periods.
