Parks staff update board on splash pad, Spencer Park paving, Iron Horse and golf course progress

Parks staff and contractors gave the board an update on ongoing projects and operations across the parks system, from completed paving and new playground deliveries to splash pad and pool openings and golf course construction.

Staff reported that Spencer Park’s pavilion and new asphalt parking have been completed and the area has seen increased public use. Two new playground equipment shipments were received for Spencer Park (one set for ages 2–5 and another for ages 5–12), with installation anticipated in August. The Dike restroom replacement is complete and operational. The splash pad at Millhazen Park and Iron Horse Park is being prepared; staff noted a new, more resilient computer controller had been installed after last year’s winter damage and that the splash pad would be ready when temperatures permit. The aquatic center pool is filling and lifeguard staffing and certifications are underway for a scheduled early‑June opening.

Maintenance staff completed camera upgrades at Riverside Park and are trenching power lines and installing poles to support cameras at Houston Park. Several parks have completed ADA assessments and improvements at specified sites. Staff also summarized vandalism and storm cleanup work and said some playground and restroom repairs were completed.

Golf course managers said the new clubhouse will open after inspections and that the driving range construction is progressing; they expect the driving range to open in 2026. The golf team also reported plans for a simulator room and additional year‑round revenue opportunities. Board members and staff thanked employees and volunteers; staff announced the recreation director had resigned and that the parks department would cancel one summer program because of staffing shortages.
