County reports progress on roads, jail, courthouse and Deep Lakes campground projects

County staff provided a consolidated update on construction and maintenance projects across Muscatine County at the June 2 meeting.

Engineering staff reported micro‑surfacing work on North Mulberry, 150th, and 120th streets is nearly complete; crews will return within about a week to reapply pavement markings. The 120th Street bridge deck pour was underway that day. A reclamation project on Salisbury in north Tipton began the same day and will include hauling in asphalt millings.

County Engineer Brian Horschowski said the office has started advertising to replace a recent engineering resignation and that one staff member, Brian Meinsman, recently obtained a PE license. Horschowski also reported ongoing work on a box culvert bid letting and other road projects.

Among facility projects, county staff said the jail insulated-panel installation has started with base trim being placed and that courthouse roofing crews were making progress on scaffold work and slate replacement, with a contractor hoping to finish within two to three weeks, weather permitting. Phase 2 repairs to the administration building have begun, including power washing and upcoming tuckpointing; officials said they will manage public access while work occurs.

At the Deep Lakes campground site, staff reported roadways and aggregate placement are complete, conduits for electrical and communications are installed and mapped, sewer and water lines are in, and site pads are being formed; staff said the project is about one week behind the initial schedule and remains on track for a fall completion, weather permitting.

Staff asked residents and stakeholders to expect intermittent access changes around buildings as roof and masonry work proceeds and said they are coordinating schedules to minimize public disruption.
