Police Chief Gilbert will leave the Saint Albans Police Department on June 27, city council members announced during the June 2 council meeting.
Councilman Roe said Chief Gilbert has served ‘‘30 plus years, between being an officer and the chief of police,’’ and that the chief ‘‘has had an outstanding ... career’’ and ‘‘is a community guy’’ who will be ‘‘greatly missed.’’
The council also reported personnel changes at the MUC following the retirement of its superintendent, Kenny. Councilman Roe said he promoted Steph Stefano on a probationary basis to fill Kenny’s role and moved Jason Fazell into Stefano’s prior position. Roe told the council that other internal candidates had been asked earlier but declined changes to remain in their existing roles.
Councilman Roe said the city will determine how to fill the police chief position and that he would consult with Chief Gilbert and other officers before making a recommendation.
The announcements came during the meeting’s letters and reports section; council members and attendees offered applause for the departing and promoted employees. No formal hiring or appointment votes were taken at the June 2 meeting, and the council did not set a public timeline for the police chief replacement process.
