Sam Thorpe, a resident who said he has owned the lot on Fair Park Avenue for 53 years, told council Monday he received an abatement bill after the city mowed his property and that he did not receive prior notice at the house or on a pole. "We mowed it 4 times already ... but we got a thing in the mail ... a hundred and $15 to mow it and a hundred and 50, for abatement," Thorpe said.
Thorpe described neighborhood blight near his lot and said he had attempted to contact city staff without success; he asked for help avoiding additional tax or lawyer costs. City Manager Josh responded that staff, including the law director and Ms. Holt who manages the abatement process, would follow up directly this week using the contact information Thorpe provided. Josh and Ms. Holt said the manager's office and the appropriate staff would contact him and review the property's status and abatement billing.
Ending: City staff acknowledged the complaint and committed to direct follow-up with Thorpe by phone this week to review notices, the billing and next steps.
