Commissioners recommend modest salary increase and stipends for probation officers ahead of 2026 schedule

The Tippecanoe County Board of Commissioners on June 2 voted to recommend to the county council a salary schedule for probation officers that builds on the 2025 county-approved pay table.
Dave Hollinger, director of the Tippecanoe County Probation Department, reviewed the Judicial Conference of Indiana minimum salary statement for probation officers for 2026 and asked the commissioners to recommend the county adopt a schedule that avoids a projected step-back to the state minimum. Hollinger said the county in 2025 applied a 2% premium over the state minimum and had raised starting pay in recruitment steps earlier this year.
Commissioners moved to recommend the 2025 county-approved schedule plus an additional 1% for 2026, a $750 stipend for full-time employees and a $500 stipend for regular part-time employees, and to maintain starting salaries at the two-year longevity level. The board approved the recommendation by voice vote and asked staff to forward the proposal to the county council and auditor as outlined in an auditor email dated May 22, 2025.
Hollinger said the pay changes had helped recruitment: the department had previously curtailed operations because of staffing shortages and has since begun to see more applicants.
