Tax administrator reports near-complete property tax collections for FY24; motor-vehicle collections exceed budget

Burke County's tax administrator reported May collections and year-to-date figures to the Board of Commissioners and left the item on the consent agenda for formal approval at the regular meeting.
John Bridges, the county tax administrator, reported that property tax collections from July 1, 2024, through May were $54,047,103.89, equal to 98.64% of the budgeted amount, leaving a balance to collect of $746,075.11. He said motor-vehicle taxes collected $5,392,412.24, or 106.23% of the budgeted amount, with the motor-vehicle collections exceeding budget by $316,276.24.
For current-year taxes the tax administrator reported $54,439,516.13 collected (reported as 99.28% of the amount with $429,906.87 remaining) and delinquent taxes year-to-date collections of $532,144.41 (about 76% of the delinquent budget) with $167,054.33 remaining. For penalty and interest the report listed $395,054.33 collected, $66,054.33 above the budgeted amount. The total levy was described in the report as approximately $55,174,982.65 with $1,127,878.76 outstanding against that levy.
A commissioner asked about property-foreclosure statistics related to unpaid taxes; Bridges said the county receives quarterly reports from the collection firm and that more detailed numbers could be provided. No action was taken at the pre-agenda meeting; the report will stay on the consent agenda for the regular meeting.
