Board approves cooperative agreement with National Park Service to operate Five Forks visitor center

The Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 20 to approve a cooperative management agreement with the National Park Service to operate the Five Forks visitor center and about 10 acres of associated land.
Quinell Henderson, presenting for county parks and recreation, told the board the agreement assigns county staff to manage routine facility cleaning, lawn care and some Friday/Monday operations while the National Park Service will provide training for county staff and volunteers and help with marketing and programming. Henderson said the visitor center would be open to the public Fridays and Mondays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with additional NPS-supported visitor services.
Alexa Veach, superintendent with the National Park Service, and other NPS staff attended the meeting. Henderson said the county and NPS will hold quarterly meetings, build volunteer support and include trail maintenance in the partnership. Henderson described the site as “a diamond in the rough” for Dinwiddie tourism and education, and the board expressed support for using the site for recreation and school programming.
The motion to approve the cooperative agreement passed on a 5-0 roll call. Board members invited the superintendent and NPS team to join staff for a brief photo at the meeting’s conclusion.
The agreement will begin July 1, the county said, following finalization in the fiscal-year 2026 budget process.
