Gallatin resident raises animal-control response concerns at Sumner County committee meeting

Cathy Arlen, a Gallatin resident, told a Sumner County committee that animal-control responses have fallen short in recent weeks and urged officials to track and resolve individual complaints.
Arlen said two incidents in late summer illustrated her concerns: a Gallatin police officer brought a dog that “told us that animal control would not take it,” and, on another occasion, someone found an emaciated dog and “there was nobody there at 03:00 to open the door,” she said.
The comments came during the meeting’s public-comment period and focused on specific service failures and on statements Arlen said she had received from Captain McCoy. “We will continue to watch and report and let everybody know when our expectations are not met,” Arlen said.
Committee members responded by asking that complainants follow the sheriff’s reporting path first and bring truly unresolved matters back to the committee. The committee chair asked the sheriff’s office to provide a written response by email addressing the incidents cited so the citizen who complained could receive follow-up before the next meeting.
No formal policy change or vote on animal-control operations was taken at the meeting. Committee members said they want citizens to attempt resolution through the sheriff’s office first and to bring unresolved cases to the committee so staff and elected officials can evaluate whether further action is needed.
The committee did not set a deadline for the sheriff’s response during the meeting; members said they expected to receive the sheriff’s replies by email and, if a matter remained unresolved after that outreach, to revisit it at a future meeting.
