The New Berlin Common Council convened in closed session May 27 under Wisconsin open meetings law and later returned to open session to approve several items discussed in private.
The clerk read the statutory basis for closed session under Wisconsin Statutes §19.85 to allow deliberation and negotiation concerning the purchase of public property, investment of public funds, bargaining for public employees, and to confer with legal counsel on potential litigation or settlement. During the closed session the council considered an MOU between the City and the New Berlin Professional Police Association (NBPA), a potential confidential settlement in litigation involving the city, and specific insurance claims involving Matthew Matei and Allstate and a claim submitted by Badger Mutual Insurance on behalf of Ryan Veselow.
Upon returning to open session, a motion to approve the MOU between the City and the NBPA carried by unanimous voice vote. The council also approved the confidential settlement outlined by the city attorney and separately approved the claims involving Matthew Matei/Allstate and the Badger Mutual Insurance claim on behalf of Ryan Veselow; all of those actions were recorded as approved unanimously. The motions and approvals were presented by the city attorney and moved and seconded at the meeting, but individual mover names were not attributed in the public transcript.
