Tammy McCullough told the Committee of the Whole that Goodhue County supports a Master Gardener volunteer program run through the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum; six interns are completing core training and community outreach.
Tammy McCullough, extension regional director, told the Goodhue County Committee of the Whole that the county supports an active Extension Master Gardener volunteer program, with training coordinated through the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
“Every year, a pro hort class is offered for interested individuals who want to go through the core course,” McCullough said, and those interns must contribute community outreach hours as part of their training. “Currently, I believe we have 6 interns who are going through the core course and then committing back volunteer hours to the community,” she said.
McCullough said Master Gardener volunteers support community garden sites, provide information at farmers markets and partner with local libraries for educational events. The extension office provides in‑kind support to volunteers who complete the core course and offers administrative assistance to the program.
Commissioners thanked McCullough and extension staff; there were no formal actions or funding votes during the presentation.
McCullough noted the statewide program is housed at the Arboretum and described the program as an asset for community education and outreach. “It’s a very valuable program,” she said, citing volunteer contributions at public events and garden projects.
