Council approved on consent an ordinance authorizing the director of public service to advertise for proposals and contract with consultants to complete an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance study of city-owned parking garages.
Mister Lottrell, director of public service (as identified in the meeting), said consultants will evaluate all city parking garages for accessibility features including walkways, stairs, handrails and parking accessibility. "This study will allow us to get that done," he said, and staff will later bring legislation to fund design and construction for identified improvements, either as a package or one deck at a time.
Councilwoman Connor asked a procedural question about how the number of required accessible parking spaces is determined; Lottrell said he would "get back to you" with specifics because requirements can differ for residential versus commercial garages.
The ordinance was placed on consent and approved. Staff said consultants will be selected through an advertised request for proposals and will deliver an evaluation that will inform future legislation and construction sequencing.
