Matthew May said tenants and neighbors report regular drug use and public safety concerns at night near a closed BP station and that prior enforcement by Talmadge police had been effective. "What I'm asking this council to do, and the Akron Police Chief over there, is we need more units within that area to control the prostitution, the the gambling, and the drugs," May said. He also urged the city to consider reinstating a vice unit to monitor the corridor and cited at least one unsolved shooting on Bridal Road.
May identified the concern as local public-safety and neighborhood quality-of-life issues and asked the council to place more units in that neighborhood. The council did not record a motion or direct staff to act during the meeting.
