A volunteer committee updating the Augusta County Board of Supervisors said it is progressing on design and fundraising work for an Augusta County Military Memorial that the committee hopes to have dedicated on Sept. 11.
Volunteer and project lead David Zimmerman described the memorial's mission as preserving the legacy of local residents who served in the U.S. military and said the committee has obtained 501(c)(3) status, which allows donors to take tax deductions. Zimmerman said the committee estimates the memorial will cost between $300,000 and $500,000 and that the group will consider phased construction as it solicits contributions.
Zimmerman recounted service of Major Dwight P. Bowles, a county native missing in action from Vietnam, and said the memorial will include information for veterans in crisis, a reflective garden and educational material about Augusta County's military history. He said the design committee is working with local volunteers and that the project seeks high-school students to participate on the design committee.
Board members thanked the committee and urged timely fundraising and design completion so the committee could return to the board for any required approvals; no county funding request was presented at the meeting.
