Committee approves interim review of institutions overseen by State Board of Higher Education

The Legislative Management Committee approved a discretionary study examining institutions of higher education overseen by the State Board of Higher Education.
Senator Meerdahl, who sponsored the study proposal, said the review would bring public, institutional and legislative input to questions about governance, the impact of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, and strategic priorities for state institutions. Supporters said the study should help the system position itself on workforce, energy and medical innovation needs. Members discussed coordination with other higher-education-related committees and noted the possibility of folding dual-credit reviews and funding formula discussions into a coherent higher-education interim agenda.
Legislative Council staff advised that related committees could be coordinated to avoid duplication and that nonvoting institutional representatives could participate under the proposed structure. The committee approved the study by voice vote.
