Board adds Highland County to regional Juvenile Community Crime Control Act partnership

Augusta County supervisors approved a resolution to bring Highland County into the county's regional participation in the Virginia Juvenile Community Crime Control Act (VJCCCA), officials said at the June 2 meeting.
County staff explained the regional arrangement pools VJCCCA grant funds to fund alternatives to juvenile incarceration and to support community-based programming and sentencing options for judges. Historically Augusta, Staunton and Waynesboro combined their allocations for the region; Highland County previously returned its small allocation to the state because of its small population.
Under the approved resolution Highland County will be incorporated into the regional pot so the region receives Highland's allocation and can deploy it for regional juvenile programming. Staff said the action will not increase Augusta County's financial obligation. A motion to approve the resolution was made, seconded and adopted 7-0.
Staff said the change is intended to expand funding available for local juvenile alternatives without adding county expense.
