County funds roof repairs at two polling-place community centers; approves water easement for new animal shelter

Augusta County supervisors approved funding to replace roofs at two community centers that also serve as polling places and approved a water-line easement for a new animal shelter, the board said June 2.
For Spotswood, staff recommended replacing the polling-place roof and presented several bids; the board approved $39,866 from the Riverheads infrastructure account to pay the contractor. The board member sponsoring the funding noted the facility also hosts community events, food distribution and recreation programs and said keeping the building usable avoids having to find another polling place.
For Sherando, staff requested up to $25,000 from the South River infrastructure account to assist with roof replacement; the county and local civic groups will share costs. The board approved authorization of up to $25,000, acknowledging the final amount could change after roof removal and further assessment.
Separately, the board authorized a water-line easement to extend service to the planned new animal shelter at Brown Elementary School. Staff said the easement will allow a water line to be placed down to the vault along Route 11 and that the service authority and staff have prepared the deed of easement for execution.
Each measure was approved by motion and vote during the meeting; supervisors emphasized the facilities' community uses and the need to maintain polling-place availability.
