Western Connecticut State University revises nursing curriculum, reports accelerated program launch with 17 students

Western Connecticut State University presented a comprehensive curriculum revision to the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing, and the board voted to accept the changes May 20.
Faculty members Dr. Kim Bridges and Dr. Monica Souza described the review process and rationale: in response to the updated AACN Essentials and internal outcomes data (HESI), the program split combined courses, added two pathophysiology/pharmacology courses, reduced very large credit courses, and increased credits for leadership and research to better prepare students for practice.
The university also provided an FYI update on its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, which began classes the day before the meeting with 17 enrolled students. Dr. Dean Paladino and other Western Connecticut representatives said the ABSN program required additional time for Title IV approvals and launch logistics; the board noted the update was informational and no vote was required.
Board members praised the submission as data‑driven and student‑centered. Cindy Arpin and others complimented the program’s NCLEX performance history and documentation. The board asked nothing further beyond the formal approval and recorded the FYI ABSN startup report.
