Council appoints Chris Brown pro tem; decides to await August election for District 3 vacancy

At the June 2 Alexander City Council meeting, a councilor nominated Councilor Chris Brown to serve as pro tem and the council approved the nomination by roll-call vote.
The council recorded unanimous yes votes from Councilor Tapley, Councilor Eric Brown and Councilor Greg Phillips and the meeting chair. After the vote the chair acknowledged the appointment.
Earlier in the meeting the council addressed the vacancy in District 3 after Mr. Hardy moved on. One councilor recommended leaving the seat vacant until the August election so the winner could be seated without giving anyone an unfair advantage; "we hold out and don't do anything since election happens in August," the councilor said. Another councilor noted the League's 60-day appointment guidance but was told that as a Class 6 municipality that 60-day requirement may not apply. The council did not adopt a formal interim-appointment process at the June 2 meeting.
No additional nominations or appointments for District 3 were recorded; the council asked members to decide before future meetings whether to accept letters of intent or to appoint after the election.
