The Windcrest Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to allocate $5,000 to fund a slate of youth events in July 2025, including two water days, an arts-and-sports day and a "big rig" truck day at Takis Park.
Commissioner Lamar Lawson, who presented the plan, said the schedule will run on Thursdays in July from 10 a.m. to noon with events on July 10 (water day), July 17 (arts and sports), July 24 (water day) and July 31 (big rig day). "My hope is that each commissioner will at least attend 1 of those events in July, and that's just part of being on the commission," Lawson said.
Lawson outlined estimated costs for the program, saying water days are the most expensive line item: "the water days are fairly expensive. They're about $1,500 or so." The commission said it will work with a city vendor for water-slide rentals and with city staff to limit food-service handling by providing prepackaged snacks and fruit; Lawson said the plan includes a modest contingency.
Commissioners volunteered to staff specific dates. The commission also discussed typical vendor options — ice-cream or paleta vendors have been used previously — and the option to rent accessory equipment such as soda or popcorn machines if power is available. The commission adopted the $5,000 allocation by voice vote; the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: staff will confirm vendor availability with the city and return with event logistics and staffing sign-ups at a future meeting.
