The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on May 20 to add five residential streets to the county Speed Hump program, following staff recommendation and public testimony from neighborhood proponents.
Traffic Safety Operations Division Director Sylvia Golan told the board the Department of Transportation carried out a directive and recommended inclusion of Abilene Trail (in Snellville), Hood Road (in Lilburn), Lena Carter Road, Riva Ridge Drive and Shinn Court based on “special conditions justifying the creation of a special assessment district.” The department reported no documented opposition.
Residents who spoke at the hearing described persistent speeding and safety hazards. Christine, a resident of Abilene Trail, said she collected 31 petition signatures from neighbors on a 44‑house street and reported a recent driver traveling about 60 mph and an instance of a dog being struck. Alan Owen, who lives on Hood Road, told commissioners that the street now serves more than 100 homes and traffic from a nearby mosque with more than 150 parking spaces, that the straight quarter‑mile section encourages speeding, and pointed to past fatalities and pets killed on the roadway.
The board approved the item (listed on the agenda as 2025462) after a staff presentation and the public hearing; commissioners recorded a unanimous vote in favor.
Ending: Residents were reminded they may leave petitions and supporting materials with the clerk; staff said affected cities (Snellville and Lilburn) participate in the program where applicable and will coordinate implementation details.
