Wausau pools to stagger openings; Kaiser to remain open longest this summer as lifeguard trainings continue

The City of Wausau Parks and Recreation Committee heard Monday that the department will stagger municipal pool openings to extend access this summer without adding staffing costs and that lifeguard training capacity has been expanded.
Jamie, a Parks and Recreation staff member, said Memorial and Schulenburg pools will open this weekend; Kaiser will open a week later and remain open through Sunday, Aug. 17. "Kaiser will end up to be open through, Sunday, August 17, which is the longest we've ever had the pools open," Jamie said. Pools will operate daily roughly 12:15 p.m. to 7 p.m., with lessons run in the mornings prior to open swim.
Jamie said the staggered schedule allows the department to use one pool for lessons and dedicated training on days when another pool is closed for that day's schedule. She reported the department ran three lifeguard classes this spring and has one more class next week that is filled with 10 trainees; staff can train additional lifeguards as needed.
Jamie said the staggered openings and added training should increase lesson capacity and help staffing levels, but she noted the department is still recruiting a few more lifeguards. The committee received the update as informational; no formal action was taken.
