The Atlanta City Council unanimously adopted the fiscal year 2026 budget on June 2, approving a package the mayor and council said reflects priorities including public safety, housing, infrastructure and youth programs.
"This is a vote of confidence for Atlanta's future," Mayor Andre Dickens told the council after the adoption on consent and praised the administration and the council for the collaborative process. Dickens also highlighted public‑safety gains, saying, "our homicides have dropped over 50% over the last 3 years, year to date." He thanked Chief Financial Officer Mohammed Bala and the mayor's senior staff for their work.
Finance committee Chair Howard Shook led committee deliberations and the full council approved a substitute personnel and positions ordinance (item 25‑0‑1277) that aligns staff positions with the adopted budget. Shook described the budget passage as the culmination of well‑attended hearings and committee work. Councilmembers and the mayor repeatedly thanked finance staff and departmental leaders for timely responses to budget questions.
Councilmembers said the budget adds investments in public safety, transportation and affordable housing, and that the administration will need to manage execution carefully once the fiscal year begins. The council approved related personnel and position changes as part of the budget package and sent certain items to the mayor's office for administrative steps required by ordinance.
The mayor and council emphasized implementation and monitoring, with the council requesting regular finance reports and continued collaboration across departments to manage emerging fiscal pressures. The administration and council said there will be ongoing oversight to ensure budget commitments are carried out.
