North Hill needs amendment to all-alcohol license to serve residents in additional common areas

At a public hearing the Select Board reviewed and voted to approve forwarding an alteration-of-premises application from North Hill Needham Inc., a continuing care retirement community, seeking to amend its Section 12 all-alcohol license to add interior common areas and connected outdoor spaces to the licensed premises.

Brianna Tucker (manager of record) and a North Hill director described the requested change as a correction of an earlier oversight and as a response to resident demand: the amendment would allow alcohol service in library and gallery spaces, in a lounge adjacent to a third-floor lobby and in the bistro/cafe spaces and their associated outdoor areas, plus the immediately adjacent town green used for occasional quarterly events. The applicant said food service will continue to be provided by in-house catering for most events and that larger events would be covered by contracted caterers that provide trained staff; license-scanner technology for checking IDs will be used as required.

Board members asked about operational controls used previously, including drink tickets, the beer-tap wall and ID-checking procedures. North Hill representatives said existing staff are TIPS-certified (or the equivalent) and larger events will be staffed by outside caterers when internal staffing is insufficient.

With no public comment at the hearing, a Select Board member moved to approve the alteration and forward the application to the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) for final approval; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
