Needham profile frame blown out by wind; committee replaces Ben Kalin profile and adds Velcro safeguard

The Revitalization Trust Fund told the May 29 meeting that a mounted profile image of a resident identified in the transcript as Ben Kalin blew out of its downtown frame during high winds on May 13, but the panel was recovered and reinstalled.
A committee member said downtown video footage reviewed by Needham Police showed strong winds causing the panel to billow and slip out of the frame; the portrait sat on the ground for about four days before a member of the public brought it to Citizens Bank, and police later retrieved it. The committee had ordered a replacement while a member was out of town and reinstalled the new image this week.
As a preventive measure, speakers said they installed an eight- to ten-inch Velcro strip on the center back of the panel so the poster adheres to the panel interior and resists wind uplift. The Needham Observer planned a story about the incident, and the committee delayed the paper’s publication until the replacement was reinstalled.
No evidence of theft was reported; the committee described the incident as weather-related and said the recovered panel showed minimal damage.
