Needham trust fund reports three new memorial benches, three more proposed

The Revitalization Trust Fund reported at its May 29 meeting that three memorial benches have been installed across Needham and that three more are in the planning stages.

Trust Fund members said the first installed bench sits at Avery Common near the train station and includes an inscription referencing “the train’s coming,” placed as a dedication to a resident’s mother. They described a second bench on the Amity Path dedicated to a local veteran known in the transcript as Goodfellow, installed about four weeks before the meeting. The third installed bench, for Ron Sockle, was placed at Memorial Park on a concrete pad shipped from Ohio; Parks and Forestry prepared the site and set the bench in a raised, shaded location facing the memorial field.

Fund members described the installation method as matching the other benches in the program; the Goodfellow bench uses composite material because the wood model is no longer manufactured. The committee praised an installation contractor recommended by Eric for providing a discounted, meticulous installation that reduced sponsor costs.

Committee members also outlined three benches in development: a Volante Path bench dedicated to a longtime postal carrier who worked the route for decades; a bench planned for the space in front of the Starbucks in town (the current bench would be relocated); and a bench proposed for DeFazio Field. The DeFazio Field proposal will require site approval from Parks and Forestry and then Park and Recreation committee sign-off before installation.

Committee members noted next steps for the pending benches include finalizing inscriptions, confirming siting with Parks and Forestry, and routing the proposals to Park and Recreation for formal approval. No formal vote to approve new bench installations was taken at the meeting.
