The Kankakee City Council on June 2 approved an ordinance declaring the department’s 1998 Pierce aerial apparatus surplus and authorizing its sale.
Fire Chief LaRoche told the council the ladder truck was taken out of service late last year because required repairs would cost more than the vehicle’s value and would create a liability for firefighters. ‘‘This vehicle is a 1998 Pierce… it’s past its prime, and I think it’s time for us to to surplus it,’’ the chief said.
Councilors asked whether parts might be used for other vehicles. Chief LaRoche said the vehicle could likely be sold to a company that repairs or parts older apparatus but that there are few 1998 Pierce units still in service that need parts. The chief said a new aerial is expected within about a year and a half, and the city will seek to recoup some value by selling the surplus apparatus to a buyer for parts or scrap.
The council voted to suspend the rules and place the ordinance on final reading for passage; the ordinance was approved in roll call vote. Staff said the surplus will allow procurement and replacement planning to proceed without retaining a high-liability apparatus in active service.
