City conveys small parcels to IDOT for road project; council approves two conveyances

The Kankakee City Council on June 2 approved two resolutions to convey small fee interests and temporary construction easements to the Illinois Department of Transportation to support an IDOT road-improvement project.
Mayor Curtis said the parcels include a small corner at 758 North Hammes Avenue for $2,050 and a portion of the former dealership/lot at 1905 and 1931 East Court Street for $8,800. City staff said the areas are small and will allow IDOT to reconfigure intersections and soften turning radii as part of planned improvements.
City staff explained the conveyances include layered title components: a fee transfer, a permanent easement and a temporary construction easement. City engineers said the Court Street work should ease turning for large vehicles and that the city will review IDOT lighting plans during a later submittal to try to retain or reuse existing street lighting infrastructure.
Both resolutions passed by roll call. Staff and aldermen said the improvements are intended to improve traffic flow and safety at the affected intersections; IDOT will perform the work after acquiring the parcels and easements.
