Templeton commissioners flag USDA reorganization and program cuts; local impacts uncertain

Novak said one consequential change has been a cut of "more than a billion dollars" from a federal program that allowed nonprofits to buy fresh boxes at retail price for distribution to low-income families; several farms in Templeton had taken part in that program. She said the reorganization and funding changes have "stalled out" current grants and that she did not want to speculate whether the program would resume.
Commissioners discussed potential consequences: smaller USDA field offices could mean longer wait times for service, Novak said, and local farms that relied on nonprofit purchasing channels could lose a revenue stream. Commissioners did not identify a specific statute or grant number at the meeting.
No formal action was taken; the commission recorded the update for members' awareness and did not direct staff to pursue a formal response or outreach to USDA at this meeting.
