Peoria County supervisor of assessments begins transition, posts 2025 board review rules

Chad Jones, the supervisor of assessments, told the Ways and Means Committee on June 2 that the assessor’s office is in transition after his appointment and that staff have completed much of the work on exemption renewals and initial mailing and appeal preparations for 2025.

Jones said the office has “gotten through the bulk of the renewals for the exemptions” and is entering exemption data now so it can send reminder notices in the second half of the year. He told the committee the 2025 board review rules and appeal forms were posted on the office website the day of the meeting and that the board review process and hearings will begin this fall.

“We are transitioning to the new assessor...we've gotten through the bulk of the renewals for the exemptions,” Jones told the committee. He said the office would direct taxpayers who think their assessed value is too high to the board-review process and that appellants will have months to gather evidence and file for review. Jones also said the office expects to appoint a new board review member, pending a candidate taking—and passing—a qualification test later this month; if successful, the candidate could be appointed in July.

Committee members asked how calls would be handled; Jones said staff will answer as many calls as possible but will redirect callers who need to file a formal appeal to the website and the board-review process. No vote was taken on assessment policy at the meeting.
