Assembly Bill 93 would expand eligibility for the state's heart‑and‑lung protections to every peace officer in Nevada, the sponsor told the Senate Finance Committee on June 1.
Assemblymember Brian Hibbits, sponsor of AB 93, said the bill "expands heart and lung protection to every police officer in this state as opposed to picking and choosing the way it is now." He presented a fiscal appropriation for annual physicals tied to the expanded coverage and stood for questions on implementation and collective‑bargaining interactions.
Supporters included school district police, statewide law enforcement unions and correctional officer associations. Nathaniel Wall of Clark County School District said his department supported the bill because it would extend coverage to school police officers. Rick McCann, representing the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers and the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition, and Don Hicks for correctional officers also testified in favor. Paul Lunkwitz of the Fraternal Order of Police and union representatives on the phone urged passage to ensure parity across agencies.
No opposition or neutral testimony was recorded in the hearing. Committee members asked about potential overlaps with collective bargaining; the sponsor said he did not believe collective bargaining alone would supersede NRS language and that statutory change was required to guarantee coverage.
The hearing closed on AB 93 without a recorded committee vote.
